Bombers were  designed to strike heavily  targets like  or ground artillery. Most of these ships were armed with projectile weapons such as , , and . Even externally-mounted cargo containers could be used for bombing runs. In general, bombers were slow and ungainly craft, leaving them vulnerable to enemy starfighter attack. For protection, they often relied on both fighter escorts and each other. By flying in tight formations, bombers provided overlapping fields of fire, covering each other.
